Scissor Lifts – An Overview

scissor lifts

Scissor lifts are commonly used in many industries, including building maintenance and interior design. When purchasing or leasing scissor lifts for your business, it is important to choose a model that has a good track record of safe operation. There are several companies that manufacture scissor lifts; therefore, finding one that will work for your company can be challenging at best. The type of lift you need depends largely upon what tasks your business requires the lift to perform. Scissor lifts are most commonly self-propelled; however, a scissor lifting system is also available that is controlled by a crane operator.

As with all electric lifting systems, there are advantages and disadvantages to using scissor lifts; however, the main consideration is safety. Electric scissor lifts are commonly used in applications requiring minimal access to elevated work areas. When the platform is lowered, the lifting system platform extends outward, allowing the user to exit the lift and ascend to a safer location. Today, one of the largest scissor lifts on the market, the 19-foot high eco solvent scissor lift from Genie, is also commonly found on websites and rental towers, providing workers with easy access to any work area.

Determining scissor lift height is typically done using a video camera to record the ascent and descent of the lift. The purpose of a video camera is to determine the actual distance from the scissor lift to the ground, in order to determine whether the ground is clear or not before initiating the lift. In an aerial lift installation, the height of the scissor lift should be no less than two stories above the local ground. The benefits of scissor lifts are the ease in which they can be installed, their relatively low cost and safe operation.
